A Personalised platform for regional news publishing

It is our great honour and pleasure to announce that the innovative project “A personalised platform for regional news publishing” by Styria Media Services and 24sata (Styria Media Group AG) has been awarded the prestigious Google DNI Innovation Fund, earning a grant of 500,000 Euros. This intelligent platform brings to the field of publishing top-quality innovations in the field of improving content with the help of the newest technologies. This project will improve the publishing process on digital platforms, and it will be available to media outlets throughout the entire region, thus offering a better-quality, personalised experience for users, as well as clients, which has in recent years become a global trend in publishing. This will lead to an improved user experience through the promotion of relevant, interesting, and factually accurate content that is personalised for each user.

Within the project, Styria Digital Development’s Data Science team is developing three advanced services based on machine learning technology: the first is the tag optimisation, which will ensure a standardised and optimised content-tagging process for all those who work in the production of media content for digital platforms. The platform will offer journalists the tag that best suits the assigned theme. This will greatly simplify both the tagging, as well as the searching, of desired content. The contextual recommendation system is the next service that will ensure, for all brands using the platform, the pertinent recommendation of content based on the content that the user is currently viewing, and can thereby offer the user a unique and complete experience of the themes offered. The third progressive service, the personalisation of content between brands, rounds out the idea of adapting content to the user based on their interests, as well as their behaviour on the platform itself, which is to say, the content that interests him.

It is important to emphasise that Styria Media Services and 24sata’s project was selected from hundreds of projects from the whole of Europe, all of which applied during the third round of competition for Google’s DNI Innovation Fund. This funding project, by one of the largest contemporary companies in the world, is influenced by the idea of empowering European journalism with modern technologies, by investing in innovative media projects that will prove useful for the whole media community; for those who create content as well as those who consume it. The largest European media companies are included in this project. It was established in 2015, and in the first two rounds of financing, the DNI Innovation Fund awarded more than 50 million Euros to more than 250 projects in 27 European countries. One example is the German website Tagesspiegel Causa, whose team wrote an algorithm which creates a graphic representation of each issue that is being discussed. The central theme of all these DNI projects, and the starting-point of the DNI Innovation Fund itself, would be the application of new technologies and intelligent systems in the creation of content for digital platforms. The best and brightest have participated in this project, and as such the achievements of the “Personalised platform for regional news publishing” project are all the greater, and this award is an additional encouragement for us to continue developing and offering even better-quality services and content to our users.
